Bengaluru: Heavy monsoon rains continued to batter Karnataka on Sunday, disrupting normal life in the coastal and Malnad regions as rising river levels and increasing reservoir inflows triggered flood alerts in several districts.
In Kodagu, the famous pilgrimage centre of Bhagamandala remained inundated, with Triveni Sangama, bathing ghats and nearby parks submerged under floodwaters. The Bhagamandala-Talacauvery road has also gone under water, forcing the suspension of vehicular traffic. Locals and tourists are using alternate routes.
In Dakshina Kannada, the Netravati River is flowing at a high level following continuous rainfall in the Western Ghats, prompting authorities to keep a close watch on low-lying areas.
Meanwhile, the discharge from the Kabini reservoir has been increased to 25,000 cusecs, up from the earlier 10,000–12,000 cusecs, due to a sharp rise in inflows. The increased release has raised fears of flooding in villages located along the Kabini river basin.
The district administration has advised residents living near the river to move to safer places and remain alert. With heavy rainfall expected to continue over the next few days, officials said reservoir inflows could increase further and the situation is being closely monitored.
