Mangaluru: Government Lady Goschen Hospital in Mangaluru has been selected for the state-level Best District Hospital award after recording zero maternal deaths in cases involving legal abortions and post-abortion care during 2025-26.
The hospital secured the top position among district hospitals in Karnataka in an assessment conducted jointly by the state Department of Health and Family Welfare and the Ipas Foundation.

During the year, the hospital handled 304 cases under the Comprehensive Abortion Care (CAC) programme, following prescribed clinical protocols. Of these, 191 cases involved pregnancies below nine weeks, 31 were between 10 and 12 weeks, 52 between 12 and 20 weeks, 25 between 20 and 24 weeks, and five were beyond 24 weeks.
The hospital also prioritised post-abortion counselling, with around 95% of beneficiaries receiving guidance on family planning methods. Follow-up measures were taken to encourage the adoption of suitable contraceptive practices.

Specialised facilities strengthen care
Medical Superintendent Dr Durgaprasad M R attributed the achievement to several healthcare initiatives, including a WhatsApp-based High-Risk Pregnancy Tracking System, an Obstetric Intensive Care Unit, a Critical Care Unit and a dedicated High-Risk Pregnancy Delivery Unit.
He acknowledged the contribution of specialists from Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Anaesthesiology, Radiodiagnosis and Neonatology, along with nursing, paramedical and technical staff.

Dr Durgaprasad said life-saving equipment procured through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) support from various organisations had further strengthened the hospital’s healthcare services.
He also thanked the health minister, elected representatives, district administration officials and social organisations for their support. He urged the hospital staff to sustain the achievement through continued commitment to safe maternal healthcare and quality patient services.
