Bengaluru: Karnataka Health Minister U.T. Khader has directed officials to ensure that all mental health facilities across the state fully comply with the Karnataka Mental Healthcare Regulations, 2026.
Khader said he held a meeting with the Karnataka State Mental Health Authority (KSMHA) and experts from the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) to discuss the implementation of the regulations.
The standards apply to five categories of facilities, including standalone mental health establishments, psychiatry departments in medical colleges, psychiatric wards in hospitals, de-addiction centres and rehabilitation facilities.
Under the regulations outlined by the minister, facilities must maintain a ratio of one psychiatrist for every 30 patients, ensure nurses are available during every shift and provide access to psychologists or social workers.

The prescribed standards also cover hygiene, disability-friendly infrastructure and access for emergency ambulances.
Khader directed officials to ensure that every facility prominently displays its registration number, details of the services offered and contact information for the Karnataka State Mental Health Authority.
Emphasising the need for accountability in mental healthcare, the minister said there would be no compromise on the safety and dignity of people seeking treatment.
The directive is aimed at ensuring that mental health facilities across Karnataka adhere to the prescribed staffing, infrastructure and service standards.
People seeking mental health support can contact the free Tele-MANAS helpline at 14416 or 1800-89-14416.
