New Delhi, Oct 19 (IANS) In response to sexual harassment allegations against Congress MP and JNU-associated professor Angamcha Bimol Akoijam, the Delhi BJP Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe Morcha staged a protest outside the Congress office on Monday.

The protest was led by State General Secretary Yogita Singh, said a Delhi BJP statement.

Addressing the protesters, Yogita Singh launched a sharp attack on Congress, stating that while the party makes grand claims about women’s dignity and rights, its silence exposes its double standards when serious complaints are made by female students against its own MP.

She said that before lecturing others on women’s safety, Congress must answer questions concerning cases involving its own leaders and MPs.

Yogita Singh said that in Congress politics, talk of women’s dignity appears to be confined to speeches and press conferences.

She stated that if the Congress continues to remain silent on this matter involving its MP, despite complaints by 11 female students and the findings of the JNU internal committee, it will raise questions about the party’s claims of being committed to women’s welfare.

State President of the Scheduled Tribe Morcha C.L. Meena said that university campuses should provide female students with an environment conducive to education and safety, rather than places where any student feels apprehensive about her dignity and security.

He said that the Congress, which engages in political rhetoric on women’s safety, must provide clear answers instead of evading its moral responsibility in this matter.

Meena said that Congress must clarify what action it is taking and how it is ensuring accountability in connection with the entire matter involving its MP.

He stated that the true nature of Congress’s claims about respecting women becomes a subject of scrutiny when questions arise concerning cases involving its own leaders.

Ranjit Singh, State Vice President and Delhi BJP SC/ST Morcha In-charge, along with Sundar Singh Chaudhary, Co-In-charge of the ST Morcha, demanded that Congress break its silence on the matter and publicly present its position on the entire episode, said the Delhi BJP statement.
