New Delhi, Sep 7 (IANS) Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Monday expressed sadness and concern over the collapse of a five-storey PG hostel in South Delhi, the deaths caused by spurious liquor in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district, and the loss of life and property due to floods in states such as Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
She said these incidents indicate that the government and administration are not fulfilling their responsibilities properly and stressed the need for greater vigilance in matters concerning public welfare.
“The collapse of a five-story PG hostel in South Delhi, resulting in the deaths of five people, and the deaths of 18 people yesterday in Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh after consuming poisonous liquor, and the subsequent hospitalisation of approximately 190 sick people for treatment, and the destruction of life and property due to floods in states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are extremely sad and worrying”, she said in a post on X.
“These incidents prove that the government and administration are not fulfilling their responsibilities properly, which is why governments urgently need to be vigilant in matters of public interest and welfare. Governments also need to strictly curb the increasingly fatal negligence, indifference, and corruption of officials,” she said.
Meanwhile, at least six people have now been confirmed dead in the residential building collapse in Delhi.
The Delhi Police have issued a Look Out Circular (LOC) against building owner Hariram Bansal following the fatal collapse of the five-storey building in Satya Niketan, as investigations into the incident and responsibility for the tragedy continue.
The police registered an FIR against Bansal and others in connection with the building collapse on Sunday. According to the police, the structure was being used as paying guest (PG) accommodation, and renovation work was allegedly underway in the basement when the building suddenly collapsed.
The five-storey building, known as ‘Hostel Daze’, was operating as a boys’ PG, with several students staying on the premises when the incident occurred. An adjacent building also collapsed, according to eyewitnesses, raising concerns over the safety and structural condition of buildings in the area.
Meanwhile, as many as 84 people are undergoing treatment after allegedly consuming spurious liquor in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district, while the tragedy in its Banda tehsil has left around a dozen people dead, officials said on Monday.
Of the 84 affected persons, 59 were admitted to Bundelkhand Medical College (BMC), 17 to the district hospital, and seven to the Banda Civil Hospital.
The incident has raised concerns over the availability and sale of illicit liquor in the region, with authorities monitoring the condition of those undergoing treatment.
Meanwhile, floodwaters from the Ganga and its tributaries, including the Punpun and Dardha rivers, continued to wreak havoc in Patna and adjoining areas on Sunday. The situation was aggravated by heavy rainfall in their catchment areas in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
The flooding has affected several areas, with authorities continuing relief and rescue efforts amid concerns over further deterioration of the situation due to continuing rainfall and rising water levels.
