Pune, Aug 25 (IANS) The Bundgarden police have arrested three people in connection with the robbery of a senior booking clerk at Pune Railway Station.
The police team used footage from more than 150 CCTV cameras to trace the accused to Dombivli East.
According to police, the incident occurred around 1 a.m. on August 18 when the clerk was performing ticket-booking duties at the railway station. Two unidentified men allegedly attacked him with a knife and threatened to kill him before snatching cash, two mobile phones and a gold chain. The accused then fled from the spot.
A complaint was filed with the police soon afterwards. Thereafter, a case was registered at Bundgarden police station. Senior Police Inspector Santosh Pandhare formed two teams to trace the suspects.
Investigators examined footage from around 150 CCTV cameras installed along the route from Pune Railway Station to Dombivli East Railway Station. The footage helped police obtain images of the suspects and establish their movements after the robbery.
During the investigation, police learned that the accused had reached the Manpada police station area in Dombivli East. Based on information received by police personnel Prakash Ahawad and Saras Salvi, the suspects were traced to the Bhopar Gaon Kamani area.
A joint team of Bundgarden police and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) intelligence branch conducted a raid around 4 a.m. on August 21 and arrested two suspects.
The accused were identified as Jitendra Motiram Rathod, 24, and Ishwar Gorakh Chavan, 23. Both are originally from Jalgaon and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar districts and were residing in Dombivli East.
During questioning, the two allegedly admitted their involvement in the robbery. Police subsequently learned that their relative, Ajay Madan Chavan, 35, had also assisted in the crime and arrested him.
Police said the stolen cash and two mobile phones were recovered from the accused. Further investigation is underway.
