Hyderabad, May 26 (IANS) In another blow to the banned CPI (Maoist), its Central Committee Member Pasunoori Narahari and his wife Medara Danamma surrendered before Telangana Police on Tuesday.
Director General of Police C.V. Anand produced the senior underground leaders of the Maoist outfit before the media.
Pasunoori Narahari alias Vishwanath alias Salai Da is the Bihar-Jharkhand Special Area Committee (BJSAC) secretary, while Danamma alias Latha alias Poonam alias Joba is a State Committee Member (SCM).
The DGP said that with their surrender, the last surviving Eastern Regional Bureau of CPI (Maoist) is on the verge of collapse.
A native of Telangana’s Hanumakonda district, 64-year-old Narahari joined the Radical Students Union (RSU) while studying in the first year of his degree course.
In 1988, he married Danamma of Guntur district.
According to police, in 1982, under the influence and at the behest of late Puli Anjaiah, then CPI (ML) People’s War AP State Committee Secretary, he formally joined CPI (ML) People’s War and became part of the Kunta Dalam operating in Sukma district, Chhattisgarh.
In 2006, he was promoted to the rank of State Committee Member (SCM) and joined the Bihar-Jharkhand Special Area Committee (BJSAC) as an SZC Member, where he remained until 2010.
He served as head of the Technical Department team, a seven-member unit under the BJSAC, until 2014.
In 2014, he was transferred to the Bihar State Committee, where he served as the in-charge of the Gaya District Organisation until 2017.
In 2017, he was promoted to Central Committee Member under the Eastern Regional Bureau (ERB).
Police said he possessed extensive expertise in the manufacturing and maintenance of firearms, mortars, rockets, rocket-propelled grenades, grenades, and booby traps.
He also imparted training to Maoist cadres in weapons production, repair, and maintenance, while simultaneously handling technical and organisational responsibilities at senior levels.
Danamma, 55, joined the Maoist movement after her marriage to Narahari.
In 1997, she joined the Technical Department Team in South Bastar, Dandakaranya, Chhattisgarh.
In 2000, she was promoted to DCM and transferred to the Nagpur Technical Department Team.
She was arrested in Nagpur in 2004.
After her release from jail on bail in 2011, she again joined the party.
From 2011 to 2012, she served as a DVC Member on the Bihar-Jharkhand Special Area Committee (BJSAC).
In 2018, she was promoted to SCM in BJSAC during a special plenum meeting.
The DGP said that as per the Telangana government’s rehabilitation policy, the total eligible reward amount of Rs 25 lakh to Narahari and Rs 20 lakh to Danamma had been handed over to them through demand drafts.
In addition, they will receive further benefits in accordance with the rehabilitation policy for surrendered cadres.
C.V. Anand said that the health of all Maoist cadres who surrendered in Telangana, irrespective of their native place, is being duly taken care of.
As assured by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, health cards for all cadres who surrendered between 2024 and 2026 in Telangana are currently being processed and will be issued shortly.
The DGP revealed that 822 cadres of CPI (Maoist), including five Central Committee Members and 23 State Committee Members, have surrendered since 2024.
He said the Telangana Police, through the dedicated and coordinated efforts of the Special Intelligence Branch, demonstrated exceptional commitment and strategic effectiveness in 2026, achieving remarkable success in countering Left-wing extremism.
During 2026, a total of 264 underground CPI (Maoist) cadres have surrendered in Telangana, reflecting the growing trust in the government’s rehabilitation policies and the sustained pressure created by security forces, he said.
In addition, 238 firearms have been recovered in Telangana in 2026 alone, marking a significant depletion of the group’s armed strength.
Overall, the efforts of the Telangana Greyhounds and district police, led by the Special Intelligence Branch in 2026, mark a decisive turning point in the fight against extremism.
The surrender of senior cadres, including top leadership earlier in 2026, has already pushed Maoism to its last stage of survival, he said.
The police chief said only three active underground cadres from Telangana are presently serving in different formations of the CPI (Maoist) outside Telangana.
They include Central Committee Member Muppala Laxman Rao alias Ganapathi.
He appealed to them to give up armed struggle, join the mainstream, and avail themselves of the benefits of the Telangana government’s surrender and rehabilitation policy.
