Chennai, Aug 25 (IANS) The State Legislative Assembly will on Tuesday take up demands for grants concerning key departments, including Natural Resources, Industries, Investment Promotion, Commerce, Information Technology and Digital Services.
The ongoing session has entered the department-wise discussion stage following the presentation and debate on the government’s first Budget.
The general Budget was presented in the Assembly on August 5, followed by the Agriculture Budget on August 6. Members of the ruling party and the Opposition debated the two Budgets for three days on August 7, 10 and 11. Finance Minister Maria Wilson and Agriculture Minister Vinod replied to the debate on August 12, addressing questions and criticism raised by legislators. The Assembly was subsequently adjourned for four days because of the Independence Day celebrations. Proceedings resumed on August 17, with the House taking up demands for grants for various government departments.
During these discussions, legislators examine the funds allocated to each department and raise questions about the implementation of existing schemes, administrative shortcomings and the government’s policy priorities.
Ministers overseeing the departments respond to the issues raised and usually announce new projects and welfare measures before the demands for grants are put to a vote.
On Tuesday, the House will discuss the financial allocations and functioning of the Natural Resources, Industries, Investment Promotion, Commerce, Information Technology and Digital Services departments.
The debate is expected to focus on the sustainable use of natural resources, measures to attract domestic and international investment, expansion of industrial infrastructure, support for new businesses and steps to improve the state’s commercial environment.
The government’s plans to strengthen information technology infrastructure and expand digital delivery of public services are also likely to figure prominently.
Opposition members are expected to question the government over the progress of investment commitments, employment generation, industrial development outside major cities and the accessibility of online government services in rural areas.
Members of the ruling party are likely to highlight the administration’s initiatives and seek additional projects for their constituencies.
After the debate, Natural Resources Minister D.K. Prabhu, Industries Minister Keerthana and Information Technology Minister Kumar will respond to the questions and suggestions raised by the members.
The three ministers are also expected to announce fresh schemes and policy initiatives relating to their respective departments. The grant demands will then be taken up for approval by the Assembly as part of the Budget process.
