New Delhi: In a major relief for Karnataka, the Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed Tamil Nadu’s petition challenging the Mekedatu balancing reservoir project across the Cauvery river, marking a significant legal victory for the state.

Advocate General K Shashi Kiran Shetty, representing the Karnataka government, hailed the verdict as an “unprecedented victory”, crediting it to the state’s firm legal stance and sustained efforts by the legal team.

“For seven years, Tamil Nadu had been obstructing this project through legal means. The Supreme Court’s decision now clears the way for Karnataka’s ambitious Mekedatu project to move forward,” Shetty said, expressing satisfaction over the outcome.

He reiterated that the Mekedatu project is eco-friendly and designed to ensure no adverse impact on Tamil Nadu’s water interests. “The project primarily aims to provide drinking water and essential infrastructure. We are only preparing a detailed project report (DPR) in line with the directions of the Cauvery Water Management Authority,” he clarified.

The apex court, after hearing detailed submissions from both sides, found merit in Karnataka’s arguments and upheld the state’s position. Advocate General K Shashi Kiran Shetty commended the entire legal team for their “dedicated and coordinated efforts” in securing the judgment.

“This is not just a legal triumph, but a moral boost for Karnataka’s long-standing developmental goals,” he added.
