New Delhi, Aug 16 (IANS) Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Sunday said that she has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeking a probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into attacks on her husband and party chief Sukhbir Singh Badal.
Sukhbir Badal was attacked by a man dressed as a Nihang at a gurudwara in Maharashtra’s Nanded on Thursday. In 2024, a similar attempt to assassinate the SAD chief was made while he was serving his penance at the entrance of the Golden Temple in Punjab’s Amritsar.
Speaking to reporters, Harsimrat Kaur Badal showed a picture of the ‘kirpan’ which was allegedly used to attack the Akali Dal chief.
She also showed a picture of the injured right hand of Sukhbir Badal, saying: “He has received multiple stitches on his hand following the attack.”
“This is a part of a wider conspiracy,” she alleged.
Questioning the Punjab Police and the AAP government in the state, she said: “The accused involved in the previous December 2024 attack is roaming free under this (AAP) government, despite being a well-known ISI terrorist who had even threatened to disturb peace in the country through bombings.”
She alleged that strict action wasn’t taken against the accused by then Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar and DGP Gaurav Yadav.
“The case was so weak that the accused was easily released. So, I think this is the reason the attack (on Sukhbir Badal) took place again.”
Bhullar was recently transferred from his post of the Amritsar Police Commissioner, days after being caught in a controversy over his purported statement linking Pakistan ISI-backed terror modules busted by the Punjab Police with protesters at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.
“I have written to the Home Minister demanding an NIA probe because a massive conspiracy lies behind this; strict action must be taken against anyone involved — whether they are police officers, politicians or anyone else. I hope my request will be considered for the sake of the country and that of Punjab,” she stated.
