Patna, July 2 (IANS) The prime accused in the sensational viral obscene video case from Bihar’s Gaya district was taken into custody by police on Thursday.
The accused, identified as Rehan, who had been evading arrest for several days, surrendered at the Phulwari Sharif Police Station in Patna amid sustained police pressure and continuous raids conducted by the investigating team.
According to an official, the accused decided to surrender after an intensive manhunt and mounting pressure from the Special Investigation Team (SIT) left him with no avenue to evade arrest.
A team from the Gaya Police has left for Patna to take Rehan into transit custody and bring him back to Gaya for further legal proceedings.
The case came to light after an allegedly obscene video involving a young woman from the Banke Bazar area was circulated on social media.
Following the incident, the victim’s brother lodged an FIR against Rehan at the Banke Bazar Police Station, prompting the police to launch an extensive search operation.
Investigators had been conducting raids at multiple locations to apprehend the accused before his surrender in Patna.
Magadh Range Inspector General (IG) Vikas Vaibhav said that those involved in crimes that violate the dignity of women would face stringent legal action.
He emphasised that the police are committed to ensuring that offenders responsible for such serious offences are brought to justice in accordance with the law.
The IG also stated that, considering the sensitive nature of the case, the police would seek a speedy trial so that judicial proceedings could be completed at the earliest and appropriate punishment, as determined by the court, could be ensured.
Police officials have said that the investigation into the case is continuing, and further legal action will be taken based on the evidence collected during the probe.
