Srinagar, May 11 (IANS) The X account of Iltija Mufti, the daughter of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) President and former J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, has been withheld in India.

The platform said that the action has been taken in response to a legal demand. It announced the withholding of Iltija Mufti’s account days after the Cyber Police Kashmir registered an FIR against her following the circulation of a video clip featuring late separatist Hurriyat leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

Attempts by users to access her X account in India came to a notice stating that access to the account has been restricted in compliance with a legal request.

Similar notices are generally issued by X when accounts are blocked or withheld under legal provisions or government directives.

Cyber Police Srinagar has registered FIR No. 11 under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), alleging that certain online content promoted separatist narratives and could disturb public order.

Iltija Mufti had publicly stated that she alone should be held responsible for sharing the video and had urged authorities not to harass those who merely reposted or interacted with her content.

She has been critical of action against separatists, holding that meaningful engagement is the only way to resolve issues, and punitive action only leads to embittered of public relations and creation of mistrust among the people.

She has often opposed the imposition of restrictions by authorities, including the house arrest of her mother and other leaders to maintain law and order.

Last year, she gave a slip to her personal security by leaving her mother’s residence in the middle of the night and later showed up in the Poonch district of the Jammu division.

Iltija Mufti fought the 2024 Assembly elections from her ancestral hometown constituency of Bijbehara in Anantnag district, but was defeated by National Conference (NC) candidate, Dr Bashir Ahmad Shah Veeri.
