Guwahati, April 4 (IANS) BJP national president Nitin Nabin on Saturday said the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government has, over the past decade, ensured both development and preservation of Assam’s legacy, transforming regions once plagued by neglect and instability.
Addressing an election rally in Ramkrishna Nagar Assembly constituency in Sribhumi district, the BJP leader alleged that earlier regimes reduced areas like Barak Valley into “crime hubs” due to vote-bank politics.
Recalling his visits to the region between 2010 and 2012 as a youth leader, Nabin said the atmosphere was marked by unrest, poor connectivity and public hardship.
“People struggled with bad roads and faced immense difficulty travelling from Guwahati to the Barak Valley. Today, that situation has completely changed. With improved road infrastructure, connectivity is smooth and accessible,” he said.
Highlighting the infrastructure push under the NDA, he credited public support for enabling the government to “lay a strong network of roads” across the state, significantly improving mobility and economic activity.
Targeting the Indian National Congress, Nabin claimed that during its rule, there was neither livelihood security nor safety for women and local communities. “People were forced to struggle for basic needs and employment. Neither ‘roti’, nor ‘beti’, nor ‘maati’ was safe, while appeasement politics dominated,” he alleged.
He further accused previous governments of ignoring concerns of indigenous people while being “sympathetic towards infiltrators,” adding that voters in Assam have “punished such politics.”
Contrasting past governance with the present, Nabin said earlier governments were focused on personal gains, while under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the welfare of the poor has become a priority.
“Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, around 22 lakh houses have been built for the poor in Assam alone,” he said. He urged voters to continue supporting the BJP to sustain development momentum in the state.
