Bhopal, July 19 (IANS) The five-day monsoon session of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly will commence on Monday, setting the stage for heated debates between the ruling party and the opposition.
Scheduled to continue until July 24, the session is expected to witness sharp exchanges as the government prepares to table several significant Bills, including the much-discussed Uniform Civil Code (UCC).
During a cabinet meeting in Jagdishpur on Sunday, approval was granted for multiple legislative drafts, among them the UCC. These will now be presented in the Assembly. Other Bills lined up include amendments to the Private Universities Act, the Madhya Pradesh Fire and Emergency Services Bill, highway-related amendments and revisions to the Civil Defence Code.
The opposition Congress has finalised its strategy to corner the government on a wide range of issues. Party leaders intend to raise questions on law and order, rising crime, unemployment, corruption, farmers’ grievances, crop damage, inflation, power supply shortages and matters concerning education and health.
Congress has also signalled its determination to press for clarity on OBC reservation, demanding answers on the promised 27 per cent quota.
According to the Assembly secretariat, the session has already attracted an overwhelming number of submissions. Since the notification was issued, 1,756 notices for questions have been received, including 900 starred and 856 unstarred queries.
In addition, 267 ‘calling attention’ motions, five adjournment motions, 20 private member’s resolutions and 77 ‘Zero Hour’ notices have been filed. These figures point to a turbulent session ahead, with the opposition expected to challenge the government on multiple fronts.
Assembly Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar visited the House on Sunday to review preparations. He instructed officials to ensure smooth conduct of proceedings and inspected the Central Hall. He was accompanied by Principal Secretary Arvind Sharma during the inspection.
With the government determined to push through its legislative agenda and the opposition equally resolute in raising public concerns, the monsoon session promises to be one of the most contentious in recent times. An adjunct budget is also likely to be tabled during the session.
