Bhopal, Aug 29 (IANS) Chief Minister Mohan Yadav will review the flood situation caused by the overflowing Mandakini River in Chitrakoot and the damage from heavy rainfall in the region.
He will hold a meeting in Rewa to assess the impact in Chitrakoot. At the same time, on Sunday he is scheduled to inspect the flood-affected areas in Satna district physically, a statement said.
Continuous heavy rainfall has led to severe flooding of the Mandakini river in Chitrakoot, which falls under Satna district on the Madhya Pradesh–Uttar Pradesh border. The administration, along with SDRF rescue teams, is actively engaged in relief and rescue operations.
The old bridge on the Hanuman Dhara access road from Ramghat has been damaged due to the strong currents. Indian Air Force helicopters were also deployed for aerial reconnaissance and to assist stranded residents, though operations were hampered at times by low visibility.
Officials reported that the river’s water level rose sharply after intense showers, with some areas receiving 10–12 cm of rain in a few hours and Majhgawan tehsil recording over 148 mm, the statement said.
Ramghat and adjoining ghats were inundated, affecting hundreds of shops, homes and religious structures. Connectivity between Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh was disrupted as bridges and roads went underwater.
Around 36 villages were placed on high alert, while boats were pressed into service for evacuations. More than 50 people have been rescued so far, with no loss of life reported.
Arrangements for food and medical assistance have been made at six relief shelters set up in Chitrakoot for those displaced by the floods.
The water level of the Mandakini, which had approached or exceeded previous high marks, is now rapidly decreasing and moving towards the maximum flood level of 136 metres. Local authorities continue to monitor the situation closely amid forecasts of further rain in the coming days.
The Chief Minister’s review and on-ground inspection are expected to focus on accelerating relief measures, assessing infrastructure damage and ensuring adequate support reaches the affected population in both Chitrakoot and wider Satna district.
