Kohima, Aug 5 (IANS) Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J.P. Nadda on Wednesday assured that the Centre stands firmly with the Nagaland government in tackling the ongoing flood situation, saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government is working in close coordination with the state to ensure timely relief and all necessary assistance reaches every affected family.
The Union Minister, along with Assam’s Health and Family Welfare Minister Ashok Singhal and Rajya Sabha MP from Nagaland Phangnon Konyak visited landslide affected areas at Mon Town.
Nadda inspected the landslide-affected locations at Defence Colony and adjoining affected areas at Techa ward. He also met the bereaved families, and interacted with displaced residents at the Konyak Union Office.
“Expressed the Central government’s deep sympathy and unwavering commitment to the people of Mon district, while assuring every possible support for the ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, the Central government stands firmly with the Government of Nagaland during this difficult time, working in close coordination and with utmost sensitivity to ensure that every affected family receives all necessary assistance,” the Union Minister later said in a post on his X account.
While talking with the affected people, Nadda expressed his solidarity, saying that it was a very disheartening and painful incident.
Union Minister Nadda encouraged the victim and the citizens of Mon district that the “people are not alone in these hours, many people and the Union government are holding you all”.
He said that he had seen it and was aware of the situation that the people are facing after the calamities.
He assured that the Union government will not leave no stone unturned to support and restore it and the Central team will visit to support the relief.
The visiting Union Minister also conveyed the Prime Minister’s message to the victims’ family and acknowledged the initiative, taken out by the district administration led by the Deputy Commissioner of Konyak Union, Konyak Students’ Union, Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong in emergency relief camps.
He also appreciated all the rescue teams led by the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, SDRF, civil societies and all the volunteers.
Deputy Commissioner of Mon District, Wennyei Konyak, briefed the disaster situation in Mon District, saying that incessant heavy rainfall has triggered floods and landslides in several locations.
Roads, bridges and public infrastructure have suffered extensive damage.
Many villages experienced temporary disruption of road connectivity.
Heavy rainfall triggered multiple landslides across Mon District.
Defence Colony and adjoining areas were among the worst affected.
Residential houses sustained damage and several families were displaced.
Road connectivity at multiple stretches was disrupted. Power and water supply were temporarily affected in certain locations.
Relief camps and temporary shelter arrangements were established where required.
Foodgrains, drinking water, medicines and essential commodities are being distributed, the Deputy Commissioner added.
Konyak Union President, Yamao Konyak, expressed his gratitude to Union Minister Nadda and his team for their visit.
He said that their visit says that Mon is not alone in this distress hour.
Officials said incessant monsoon rainfall on July 19 and 20 triggered catastrophic landslides and flash floods across Nagaland’s Mon district, claiming several lives, destroying homes, causing extensive damage to agricultural land and completely disrupting connectivity by blocking key arterial roads.
The district recorded 83.95 mm of rainfall on July 19, while the Automatic Weather Station at Mon district headquarters registered a cumulative 341 mm of rainfall between July 19 and 31, underscoring the severity of the monsoon deluge.
