Hyderabad, Sep 6 (IANS) Telangana Rakshana Sena (TRS) President Kalvakuntla Kavitha on Sunday demanded the arrest of the police constable who recently posted derogatory comments about her on social media.

Reacting to the suspension of the police constable, she said this was not enough and asked why he had not been dismissed and booked under relevant provisions.

She demanded that a case be registered against the policeman involved and that charges be framed against him to ensure appropriate punishment.

Addressing a press conference at the TRS office in Hyderabad on Sunday, Kavitha warned that she would raise the issue at international platforms if the government failed to act.

The former MP demanded that existing laws, including provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the IT Act, must be enforced against those who abuse women online.

“It is deeply distressing that the government and the police force remain completely indifferent when individuals holding responsible positions make inappropriate comments on social media platforms,” she said.

She asked the Director General of Police how he would react if similar remarks were made about his own daughters-in-law.

“Mr DGP, you have two daughters-in-law. If someone made such an obscene comment about your daughter-in-law, would you simply suspend him and stay silent,” she asked.

Kavitha said that she couldn’t imagine how everyday women are treated when they try to seek justice, considering the treatment meted out to her, who has had a 20-year experience in active politics.

She demanded that the hate speech bill, which Chief Minister Revanth Reddy had spoken about in the past, be tabled in the Assembly session, beginning on Monday.

She accused the Chief Minister of using Telangana activists for political gain before the elections and failing to deliver promised identification cards, pensions and insurance even after three years in office.

“We demand that the government fulfil all the promises made to the activists who participated in the struggle for Telangana. These issues should be resolved in a time-bound manner and addressed as soon as possible,” she said

Stating that there has been no progress on the report of the Committee appointed by the government on activists’ welfare, she demanded a clear commitment from the government during the Assembly session. She warned of intensified protests if the demand was ignored.

She also called for bringing the Fee Regulation Act, saying this was extremely important as many poor families are unable to afford private education.
