Srinagar, July 23 (IANS) In the aftermath of the terrorist attack in Anantnag town in which one policeman was killed, Jammu and Kashmir Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha chaired a high-level meeting to review the security situation and ongoing Amarnath Yatra at Lok Bhavan in Srinagar on Thursday.
Officials said the meeting started at 11 a.m. and comes a day after a policeman was killed in a terror attack in Anantnag’s Lal Chowk area on Wednesday afternoon.
Heads of all intelligence and security agencies are attending the meeting. Officials said the L-G will be briefed about the situation and the Amarnath Yatra following the terror attack.
Amarnath Yatra, however, remained suspended in view of the inclement weather in Jammu and Kashmir.
Head constable Ashiq Hussain was killed by terrorists after being shot at point-blank range in Anantnag’s Lal Chowk area Wednesday afternoon.
Taking aggressive steps against the terrorists and their sympathisers, the J&K Police rounded up over 3,000 overground workers (OGWs) of terrorists from different districts of the Valley.
The Resistance Front (TRF) claimed responsibility for the Anantnag terror attack. TRF is an offshoot of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and has been claiming responsibility for terror attacks carried out by the LeT since 2019. While condemning the terrorist attack, L-G Sinha vowed that those responsible for the policeman’s killings would be avenged and brought to justice soon.
A massive manhunt has been underway by the security forces to trace the assailants, and the police have also released a picture of the terrorist, requesting the public to report if they have seen the terrorist.
A wreath-laying ceremony was held to honour the martyrdom of head constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi at district police lines Anantnag. Hundreds of people attended the funeral of the martyred policeman in his native Beerwah area.
Scores of locals were going to the house of the slain cop to console the bereaved family.
