
Kolkata, Aug 24 (IANS) The met office on Monday warned of heavy rain in several south Bengal districts over the next 48 hours under the influence of a low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.
According to the forecast, rainfall is likely to intensify across parts of south and north Bengal over the next few days as the system moves. The low pressure area, formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining regions, remained over the same area until Sunday morning.
Almost all districts of south Bengal are likely to receive light to moderate rain on Monday, with heavy showers possible in some places on Tuesday.
Jhargram and Purulia may receive heavy rain in isolated areas. Coastal districts, including East Midnapore and South 24 Parganas, may witness thunderstorms accompanied by winds of 40 to 50 km per hour.
Kolkata and several other districts could also experience thundershowers and gusty winds reaching 30 to 40 km per hour. Scattered rain is expected to continue across most parts of south Bengal on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The weather office has issued a thunderstorm warning for North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Jhargram, Purulia, Bankura, West Burdwan, Birbhum, Murshidabad and Nadia on Tuesday.
Favourable conditions for rainfall are expected to persist across Bengal throughout the week. Further alerts will be issued based on the movement and development of the low pressure system.
North Bengal is also expected to receive rain. Heavy showers are likely in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar on Tuesday. Similar conditions are forecast in Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Alipurduar on Thursday, August 28.
Meanwhile, Kolkata recorded a maximum temperature of 33.4 degrees Celsius on Sunday, 1.4 degrees above normal. The minimum temperature was 27.6 degrees Celsius, 1.2 degrees above normal. Relative humidity ranged between 67 and 94 percent.
The weather conditions may bring brief periods of intense rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds across affected districts over Bengal during this period.
