Mangaluru: The shoe attack on Chief Justice of India (CJI) Bhushan Gavai has drawn sharp condemnation from the Congress party’s legal unit, which has demanded strict legal action against the accused.

District Congress Legal Unit President and former Mangaluru Bar Association head Manoraj Rajeev said the incident was “an attack on the Constitution and democracy,” calling on authorities to register a case against lawyer Rakesh Kishore, who allegedly threw a shoe at the Chief Justice.

“Such acts against members of the judiciary are intolerable. While the CJI’s decision not to pursue a case shows his large-heartedness, the act itself is an insult to the entire judicial system,” Manoraj said.

He alleged that the incident could be part of a larger conspiracy, intended to provoke public sentiment. “If the culprits are not punished, such incidents will repeat. The people must raise their voice to stop those who disrespect the Constitution,” he added.

Calling the act “a form of treason rather than nationalism,” Manoraj asserted that those involved “cannot be called Sanatanis or patriots.” He demanded stringent legal action to ensure such acts do not recur.
