Bhopal, June 23 (IANS) Congress leaders on Tuesday targeted the land deals in Ujjain allegedly linked to Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s family, demanding a judicial investigation into the matter.

The response comes following a media report which claimed that members of CM Yadav’s family acquired multiple acres of land in Ujjain, and those would reportedly benefit from the upcoming infrastructural projects.

Terming the allegation as a “huge stain on the face of Madhya Pradesh”, State Congress President Jitu Patwari said: “The kind of reports that have come today, the Chief Minister is completely in the dock. He should answer to the 8 crore people of the state and to the country.”

Seeking Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention in the matter, he said: “A sitting judge of the Supreme Court should conduct an investigation into the matter.”

Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly, Umang Singhar, added: “These are not just allegations but proofs. We have also raised this matter in the Assembly several times. The government had said that they are getting an inquiry done, but why isn’t the inquiry happening then?”

“Ask the people of Ujjain, they are witnesses to this,” he told IANS.

Congress leader Mukesh Nayak said, “When Mohan Yadav became the Education Minister, he had 10 acres of land. Today, he reportedly owns 250 acres of land. Another matter that has now come into discussion is that his MLA representative recently purchased 65 acres of land in a very short period of time. The details that have emerged are quite shocking.”

“If we look at the land purchased by politicians only in Madhya Pradesh, over the last 20–25 years, our survey and ongoing research indicate findings that are truly astonishing and raise serious concerns about corruption,” he told IANS.

“The BJP leaders became rich, and people became poor,” Nayak alleged.

Echoing similar views, Congress leader Sajjan Singh Verma says, “Being a Chief Minister, he has full control over the development of the state – where roads will be built, and where construction should take place so that it benefits the lands owned by his family.”

Acharya Satish Maharaj said it is not right if those who are responsible for people’s welfare indulge in misdeeds.

“I don’t know if the allegations are true or not. But if it is genuine, then I strongly condemn it. One has to respect the position he or she holds,” he said.

However, he also said that if the allegations are false, then “spreading such fake news is highly condemnable”.
