New Delhi, Sep 21 (IANS) The CBI arrested an executive engineer of Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) for taking a bribe of Rs 1 lakh for the allotment of a ground for Ramleela Mela in northeast Delhi, an official said on Monday.
In subsequent searches, the probe agency recovered Rs 41 lakh in cash from the executive engineer Vedpal Meena’s house, said the official in a statement.
Meena, Executive Engineer, DUSIB, Seemapuri office, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on September 19 after laying a trap, the statement said.
The CBI registered the case on September 19 against Meena based on a complaint from Nand Nagri resident Vijay Kumar, the statement said.
It was alleged that the accused Executive Engineer, DUSIB, demanded a bribe of Rs 2.50 lakh from the complainant for allotment of ground for Ramleela Mela at Nand Nagri, Wazirabad, Delhi and agreed to accept the same in two instalments, the CBI said.
The CBI laid a trap on September 19 and caught the accused Executive Engineer, DUSIB, red-handed while demanding and accepting the first instalment of Rs 1 Lakh from the complainant, the CBI said.
Vijay Kumar gave a written complaint to the CBI against Meena on September 17. In his complaint, he said he approached the probe agency because he did not want to pay any bribe to book the ground for Ramleela Mela at E-1 Block, Nand Nagri, behind Gagan Cinema, Wazirabad Road, the CBI said.
CBI Superintendent of Police I.B. Pendhari verified Vijay Kumar’s complaint before approving the filing of an FIR against Meena.
“The discreet verification prima facie disclosed that Vedpal Meena, Executive Engineer, DUSIB, demanded undue advantage of Rs 2,50,000 and agreed to accept the same in two instalments – Rs 1 lakh as first instalment for allotting Ramleela Ground to the complainant,” Pendhari noted in the file.
“The above-mentioned facts and discreet verification prima facie disclosed commission of offence punishable under section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) on the part of Vedpal Meena, Executive Engineer, DUSIB. Therefore, a regular case under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) is registered against him,” said the CBI FIR.
