Kolkata, Aug 31 (IANS) A wife has been accused of killing her husband with the help of her brother out of greed for property, police said on Monday. The incident took place in the Mahal area of Pandabeswar in Durgapur subdivision of West Burdwan district.
Police identified the deceased as Sheikh Hasmat (44). He lived in Birbhum district and came to Durgapur for work. According to family sources, Hasmat had been staying at his in-laws’ house in Mahal for a few days.
Allegedly, he was suddenly attacked on Sunday night while he was sitting down to eat. The attack was reportedly carried out with a hammer, axe and rod. After that, Hasmat was rescued and admitted to the Durgapur Sub-district Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment.

The family of the deceased claimed that Sheikh Hasmat’s brother-in-law attacked the advice of his wife. After the incident, the Mahal area was abuzz with excitement.
On receiving the news, the Pandabeswar police station reached the spot. The body was sent from Durgapur Sub-division Hospital to Asansol District Hospital for autopsy. A specific complaint has been filed in the incident, and police have started an investigation based on the complaint.
An official of the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate said the family of the deceased had verbally complained about the murder but had not submitted a written complaint so far. “It is true that some things have been recovered from the scene. The body has been sent to Asansol for autopsy. The real cause of death will be known only after the autopsy report is received,” the official said.
Meanwhile, Sheikh Milan, the deceased’s elder brother, accused his sister-in-law of being responsible for the death. He said his brother was eating rice when his brothers-in-law and wife attacked him with sharp objects. They allegedly beat him severely with shovels, spades, axes and hammers.
He was admitted to Durgapur Sub-district Hospital in a critical condition and died there while undergoing treatment. Milan demanded strict punishment for the accused.
