Guwahati, Aug 21 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Friday highlighted the state government’s efforts to strengthen sports infrastructure and create greater opportunities for aspiring athletes, saying the focus was not merely on producing champions but on building a sporting culture for future generations.

In a post on X, Sarma said that behind every successful athlete was a system that believed in and supported their potential. “Behind every champion is a system that believes in them,” the Chief Minister said, underlining the importance of institutional support in nurturing sporting talent.

Sarma said Assam was working towards building such a support system by investing in world-class sports infrastructure, expanding access to sporting facilities and creating opportunities for young athletes across the state.

He emphasised that the government’s objective went beyond winning medals and producing sporting champions, with a broader focus on developing a culture where sports could become an integral part of the lives of young people.

According to the Chief Minister, greater investment in infrastructure and wider access to facilities would help aspiring athletes pursue their sporting ambitions and provide them with an environment in which their talent could be identified and developed.

The focus on sports infrastructure is also aimed at strengthening the state’s ecosystem for athletes by providing better facilities and opportunities closer to home.

Sarma said the ultimate goal was to inspire generations through sport, suggesting that the achievements of athletes could encourage more young people to take up sporting disciplines and pursue them professionally.

The Chief Minister’s remarks come amid Assam’s continued efforts to strengthen its sports ecosystem and promote the state as a destination for sporting activities and talent development.

The government has been emphasising the development of sports infrastructure and opportunities for young people as part of a wider approach towards youth development. Sarma said a strong sporting culture could have an impact extending beyond competition, helping inspire discipline, ambition and perseverance among young people.

He reiterated that Assam’s vision was to create a system capable of supporting athletes at different stages of their journey and enabling talented youngsters to realise their potential. The Chief Minister said the state’s investment in sports was ultimately aimed at creating lasting opportunities and inspiring future generations to embrace sport.
