Guwahati, Aug 24 (IANS) Intensifying their crackdown on cattle smuggling, Assam Police conducted a major operation in the Biswanath district, leading to the rescue of 106 livestock and the arrest of 36 people.
Taking to social media platform X, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday that the police operation targeted vehicles allegedly transporting livestock in inhumane conditions.
“Strict action continues against cow smugglers,” Sarma said, adding that Biswanath Police had safely rescued 106 livestock from 10 vehicles involved in the transportation.
According to the Chief Minister, 36 accused individuals were arrested during the operation. The rescued cattle were found being transported under conditions described as inhumane, prompting police intervention, he said.
Sarma said the action reflected the state government’s continued commitment towards preventing cattle smuggling and protecting livestock. “This action is a testament to our resolve towards cow protection and safeguarding the interests of farmers,” the Chief Minister said.
The operation comes as Assam has continued to maintain a strict approach against illegal cattle transportation and smuggling. Police and other enforcement agencies have been carrying out operations across the state against vehicles suspected of being involved in the illegal movement of cattle.
The latest operation in Biswanath also highlights the administration’s focus on checking the transportation of cattle under conditions that could endanger the animals.
Officials are expected to carry out further investigation into the arrested individuals and the network allegedly involved in transporting the livestock. The police action is likely to provide further details about the source and intended destination of the rescued cattle as the investigation progresses.
The Assam government has repeatedly maintained that strict enforcement against cattle smuggling is necessary both to prevent illegal activities and to protect the interests of farmers and livestock owners.
The latest operation adds to the series of enforcement measures being undertaken by Assam Police against alleged cattle smuggling and illegal transportation of livestock.
