Kolkata, Aug 3 (IANS) Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd, a Navratna Defence Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, has received the Notification of Award (NOA) from Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) for the construction of four Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs).

The Notification of Award (NOA) was received on July 30, 2026, GRSE said, marking a significant diversification of GRSE’s shipbuilding portfolio and reinforcing the shipyard’s growing presence in the commercial and offshore vessel segment.

The project is expected to contribute substantially to India’s offshore energy infrastructure while further strengthening the nation’s indigenous shipbuilding capabilities.

The vessels will be designed and built-in accordance with the Rules of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) and will incorporate advanced technologies to support offshore exploration and production activities, the shipyard said.

“With an overall length of approximately 80 metres, beam of 20 metres, deadweight capacity of 3,000 tonnes, endurance of 45+3 days and a clear deck area of about 650 square metres, the vessels will be capable of undertaking a wide range of offshore logistics and support missions,” GRSE said in a statement.

“A key highlight of the vessels is the incorporation of an advanced hybrid propulsion architecture, featuring electrically driven azimuth thrusters and a Lithium-Ion Battery Energy Storage System. The battery system will support peak load management, spinning reserve, dynamic positioning operations and emergency response functions, thereby enhancing operational efficiency and reducing environmental impact,” it added.

GRSE was declared a Defence Public Sector Undertaking (DPSU) in 1960. A year later, it delivered India’s first indigenous warship, INS Ajay, to the Navy. Since then, it has built and delivered over 800 platforms.

GRSE has delivered 118 warships to the Navy, Coast Guard and friendly foreign nations. This is a record for any shipyard in the country. In 2025-26, the shipyard delivered eight warships of three classes to the Navy. Three of these were delivered together on March 30, 2026.

GRSE has expertise in building all kinds of ships, including research vessels. At the moment, it is building four research vessels for NPOL, NCPOR and the Geological Survey of India.

The shipyard is also working on nine warships, including a Project 17A stealth frigate and four Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels. It is also building 12 multi-purpose cargo vessels for a German company.

GRSE has also made strides in the field of green technology on vessels. It delivered a zero-emission electric ferry to the Government of West Bengal.

Presently, 13 hybrid diesel-electric ferries are under construction at the shipyard.

The shipyard, which was elevated to Navratna status this year, is upbeat about the ONGC order. “This further expands GRSE’s footprint in the commercial and offshore vessel market and underscores its capability to deliver technologically advanced and environmentally sustainable maritime solutions,” the company has said.
