Guwahati, July 28 (IANS) Flood waters continued to affect thousands of people in upper Assam even as the overall flood situation showed signs of improvement, with over 3.32 lakh people across seven districts still reeling under the impact of the deluge, officials said on Tuesday.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 3,32,639 people in 622 villages under 21 revenue circles remain affected by the floods. The affected districts are Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, Sonitpur and Kamrup (Metro). Nearly 45,341.98 hectares of crop land continue to remain submerged, dealing a major blow to the agricultural sector.
Officials said the Dhansiri (South) river at Numaligarh was flowing above the danger level, while no river was reported to be flowing above the highest flood level.
The latest flood wave claimed seven lives in Sivasagar district, taking the total flood-related death toll in Assam this year to 75. No person has been reported missing in the current spell of floods, the ASDMA said.
The disaster management authority said 115 relief camps and relief distribution centres have been opened across the affected districts, including 81 relief camps and 34 relief distribution centres. A total of 32,477 people are currently taking shelter in relief camps, with Sivasagar accounting for the highest number of inmates, followed by Jorhat, Golaghat and Charaideo.
Rescue and relief operations are continuing with the deployment of medical teams, SDRF personnel and local volunteers in the worst-hit areas.
Officials said relief materials, including food grains, drinking water, tarpaulins, baby food, medicines, bleaching powder and other essential supplies, are being distributed among affected families.
The ASDMA said it is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with district administrations to ensure uninterrupted relief and rehabilitation measures in the flood-affected areas.
