Guwahati, July 23 (IANS) Assam Congress President, Gaurav Gogoi, on Thursday accused the Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government of failing to respond promptly to the flood crisis, alleging delays in the distribution of essential relief materials to thousands of affected families across the state.
Describing the floods as an “unprecedented humanitarian crisis”, Gogoi claimed that survivors in several districts were still waiting for basic necessities, including food, safe drinking water and sanitation supplies, days after the deluge.
In a statement shared on social media, the Congress leader said the disaster has so far claimed 41 lives, while several people remain missing.
He stated that lakhs of residents have been displaced, with many families left homeless and struggling to cope with the aftermath of the floods.
Gogoi, who is also the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, said he recently toured some of the worst-affected districts, including Jorhat, Sivasagar and Charaideo, to assess the situation on the ground.
Based on his visit, he claimed that relief operations had been inadequate and that the local administration had failed to ensure the timely distribution of emergency supplies.
According to him, flood-hit families were facing shortages of rations, drinking water, clothes, disinfectants such as phenyl and bleaching powder, and other essential items required to prevent disease outbreaks.
The Congress MP urged the BJP government in Assam to provide a transparent account of the casualties caused by the floods and ensure that relief assistance reaches every affected household without any further delay.
He also appealed to the Central government to deploy a team of technical experts to assist in rebuilding damaged homes and restoring agricultural activities that have suffered extensive losses due to the flooding.
Praising the efforts of volunteers, Gogoi said several youth groups and Gen Z volunteers had stepped forward to support affected communities by distributing relief materials and preparing meals for hundreds of families on a daily basis.
He further called upon Congress workers and party office-bearers across Assam to actively participate in relief and rehabilitation efforts and extend all possible support to people affected by the floods, particularly in the worst-hit districts of Upper Assam.
