New Delhi, April 1 (IANS) The National Commission for Women (NCW), on Wednesday, took strict note of a heinous incident involving a 12-year-old girl in Jharkhand’s Hazaribagh district and constituted a three-member inquiry committee to probe the matter.

Taking suo motu cognisance of media reports, the Commission expressed grave concern over the circumstances surrounding the case.

According to available information, the minor girl’s body was found under suspicious conditions on March 25, 2026, with indications of extreme brutality, sparking outrage and raising serious concerns about the safety of women and children.

NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar, considering the gravity of the incident, has ordered a detailed inquiry and constituted a committee to investigate the facts and circumstances.

The panel is scheduled to visit the incident site on April 2 to conduct an on-ground assessment and interact with local authorities.

The inquiry committee comprises Mamta Kumari, former NCW member; Manmohan Verma, Law Officer of the Commission; and Kanchan Khattar, Senior Coordinator.

The team has been tasked with examining the sequence of events, evaluating the response of the administration, and identifying any lapses in handling the case.

Directing the state administration and police to act swiftly, Rahatkar emphasised the need for a fair and impartial investigation.

She instructed officials to ensure that stringent action is taken against those responsible and that justice is delivered without delay.

“Such heinous crimes are unacceptable in any civilised society and ensuring swift justice to the victim is of the highest priority. The perpetrators must not be spared under any circumstances,” the NCW Chairperson said.

The Commission also underscored the importance of preventive measures to avoid recurrence of such incidents, calling for stronger mechanisms to safeguard women and children.

The inquiry committee has been asked to submit its report within 10 working days, following which the Commission will decide on further action.

The NCW said it will continue to closely monitor the case and remains committed to ensuring safety, dignity, and justice for women across the country.

The NCW’s intervention comes in the backdrop of the gruesome killing of the minor in Vishnugarh area of Hazaribagh on March 25, where the child had gone missing after attending a Ram Navami procession and was later found dead near a bamboo grove.

Preliminary findings and local accounts have indicated extreme brutality, with suspicions of sexual assault followed by murder.

The incident triggered widespread outrage in the region, with villagers demanding swift justice, prompting police to launch an intensive probe with forensic teams and detain suspects for questioning.
